Gemma Petrie is a Principal Researcher at Mozilla, leading research at the intersection of competition, regulation, and technology to understand how digital interfaces shape user behavior and how regulatory remedies can promote real choice and meaningful competition in tech markets. With over 15 years of experience in user research, she has built and scaled mixed-method teams, defined organizational standards, and fostered cross-functional collaboration to amplify research impact in fast-paced, distributed environments. Since 2019 she has directed Mozilla's competition policy research, and more recently the competition & regulation portfolio, directly informing global regulatory initiatives such as the EU Digital Markets Act. She previously led Firefox User Research, shaping strategy for one of the world’s most widely used browsers, and has held leadership roles across Mozilla’s UX and research teams. Gemma holds a BA in Philosophy from Reed College and an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has been recognized as Crain’s Chicago Tech 50 and Chicago Reader’s Person of the Year for contributions to the UX community. Based in Chicago, she combines research rigor with policy insight to bridge browser experience and regulatory realities.
