Boris Steipe is a physician-scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, with a career spanning biochemistry, molecular genetics, and bioinformatics. He founded and directed Toronto's Specialist Program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (2004–2019), shaping generations of researchers in an interdisciplinary field. His international career includes leadership roles at LMU Munich and the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, and most recently an affiliate engagement with Heidelberg University's Centre for Apocalyptic and Post-apocalyptic Studies, reflecting a wide curiosity about science, art, and humanities. His research clusters include protein chemistry, structural biology, and systems biology, and he writes at the intersection of science and aesthetics, philosophy of art. In recent years he has been guiding academia through the era of Generative AI, exploring how AI tools can augment bioscience and education.
