Dr. Sander Van Der Laan is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia and an Assistant Professor at UMC Utrecht, where he applies genetics and genomics to cardiovascular disease. He studies the genetic and epigenetic causes of carotid and coronary atherosclerosis underlying ischemic stroke and CAD, integrating genomics with histology to identify causal genes, proteins, networks, and biomarkers. His work aims to accelerate drug development by translating complex data into viable targets, using a human-centered approach that has yielded new candidate biomarkers without additional in vivo experiments. He contributes to international consortia including the International Stroke Genetics Consortium and GENIUS-CHD, GIANT, GLGC, and GoDMC. He serves as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention and Frontiers in Human Genomics. An active Open Science advocate, he formerly chaired the Open Science Community Utrecht and continues to drive GitHub/GitLab adoption and FAIR-principles implementation across UMC Utrecht.
