Senior🎓
Top SchoolAlessandro Suglia is a lecturer and research scientist specializing in Embodied Natural Language Processing with over a decade of experience building multimodal generative AI for robots and conversational agents. He holds a PhD in Robotics and Autonomous Systems and has led award-winning projects such as Alana (3rd place, Amazon Alexa Prize 2018) and the HWU EMMA team (Amazon Simbot finalist), pairing academic rigor with competition-grade engineering. His work spans industry collaborations with Amazon, Meta, and ESA, and includes state-of-the-art visual-language models (AlanaVLM) that outperformed strong commercial baselines on embodied video QA. Alessandro focuses on agents that learn through situated language games and on robust evaluation frameworks to measure real-world generalization, a practical emphasis that underpins his drive for trustworthy, deployable AI in human spaces. Based in Edinburgh, he combines hands-on model development with teaching and leadership across university and national robotics centres.
