Alex Colburn is an applied researcher and Affiliate Associate Professor in Seattle with 13+ years building systems at the intersection of deep learning, computer graphics, and computer vision to make 3D data understandable and editable. A founding member of Zillow’s 3D homes team and a former research scientist at Amazon and Microsoft Research, he has led projects spanning capture, reconstruction, visualization, and AR-enabled interaction using RGB-D sensors and projection systems. His PhD work and ongoing collaborations at the UW Reality Lab and Facial Expression Research Group reflect a long-standing focus on neural approaches to modeling geometric structure and salient image features. Alex blends academic rigor with product-minded engineering—shipping production imaging and AR systems for industry while mentoring students and collaborating with animators and architects. An unusual background spanning molecular biology to computer science gives him a multidisciplinary lens for approaching perception and modeling problems.
