Top SchoolAlvaro Cassinelli is an Associate Professor and director of the Augmented Materiality Laboratory at the School of Creative Media in Hong Kong, with 13 years of experience at the intersection of art, science and technology. Trained as a physicist with a PhD from Paris-Sud, he has led interdisciplinary research groups—from the University of Tokyo’s MetaPerception to extended reality labs—developing exotic interfaces and technologies that expand human communication and new media vocabularies. His work blends academic rigour with artistic invention, earning major honors such as the Japan Media Arts Grand Prize and recognition from Ars Electronica and SIGGRAPH. Comfortable shifting between academia, industry collaborations and start-up R&D, he pairs deep optics and laser expertise with creative prototyping and exhibition practice. A self-described tightrope walker between disciplines, he brings a rare combination of experimental physics, creative coding and curatorial sensitivity to interactive media.
