Top SchoolAndrew Lyon is a scientist-entrepreneur and academic leader with 16 years of experience building interdisciplinary engineering and biotechnology programs and ventures from concept to launch. As founding dean of Chapman’s Fowler School of Engineering and former dean of the Schmid College, he led strategic planning, facility design, faculty recruitment, and enrollment growth while creating novel STEM education initiatives like the Grand Challenges program. He co-founded multiple startups including SelSym Biotech and Sanguina, translating soft-matter and bioengineering research into point-of-care diagnostics and hemostatic therapeutics such as the SymClot platelet mimic. Based in California, he combines deep academic research in soft nanomaterials with practical commercialization experience and board-level leadership at the Beckman Foundation. Less obvious: he blends hands-on lab science with campus-scale program delivery and even grassroots coaching roles, showing a rare mix of translational science, institutional entrepreneurship, and community engagement.
