Top SchoolBastian Grossenbacher-rieck is a Full Professor and machine-learning researcher with 17 years of experience bridging pure mathematics and applied computation, currently based at the University of Fribourg and leading groups at Helmholtz Munich and TUM. Trained as a summa-cum-laude PhD in computer science from Heidelberg, he works at the intersection of geometry, topology, and ML, tackling foundational questions while shipping practical software—evidenced by contributions like a polished LaTeX thesis template that improves build reliability and Overleaf compatibility. He combines deep theoretical insight with hands-on engineering, mentoring academic teams and driving reproducible research practices. Known for persistence and a playful dedication to “doing geometry and topology for fun,” he also champions improvements to academic tooling and workflows that benefit students and collaborators.
