Ben Scholz is a Los Angeles–based drummer, percussionist, writer and producer with 15+ years of professional experience spanning live performance, recording, television and arts education. Trained at the University of North Texas and holding a Master of Music from USC, he studied with jazz luminaries including Ed Soph, Bob Mintzer and Peter Erskine. His decade in Chicago placed him alongside artists such as Roy Hargrove, Esperanza Spalding and Buddy Guy, and he’s appeared on programs for MTV, WGN-9 and Second City. An avid educator, Ben directs the Los Angeles Youth Jazz Ensemble and maintains a private lesson roster while also managing retail, repair and marketing roles at Andy’s Music Chicago. He produces and releases original work—most recently The Elec Tet’s album Shiny Metal Objects featuring Oz Noy—and brings a rare combination of classical training, jazz pedigree and hands-on industry experience. Unusually for a musician, he has contributed to open-source micro-framework documentation, reflecting a detail-oriented approach to maintaining community resources.
