Birger Johansson is a cognitive robotics researcher and pedagogue with over a decade of experience building embodied brain models and humanoid robots from Lund University’s Cognitive Robotic Lab, where he has served as director since 2019. He combines cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology and computer science to design and test real-world hypotheses using robots—co-creating the Epi robot and serving as a core developer of the open Ikaros brain-modeling infrastructure. His work spans AI, machine learning, vision, programming and 3D modeling, turning theoretical models into functioning robotic systems used in developmental cognition studies. Having held research and senior associate roles across Lund, Uppsala and UTS, he brings a rare mix of long-term academic rigor and hands-on engineering that informs public engagement as a pedagogue at Vattenhallen Science Center.
