Björn Koel is an experienced molecular virologist and coordinator at the Reference Centre Viroscience with eight years of focused work spanning academic research and the biopharmaceutical sector. He combines deep expertise in virology, NGS, bioinformatics and assay development with a proven track record of leading interdisciplinary teams and coordinating international projects. His PhD work uncovered how single amino-acid changes drive influenza antigenic evolution, and he built NGS pipelines and novel bioinformatics tools for longitudinal clinical studies. Colleagues value him as factual, decisive and results-oriented, able to translate complex science across disciplines and stakeholders. Outside the lab he channels the same persistence into long-distance trail running, currently training for an ultra-marathon.
