Summary
👤
SeniorBlue Hephaestus is a machine learning and software engineer with 11 years of experience building practical AI and bioinformatics tools that accelerate biological and medical research. As cofounder of Elytra Labs (formerly Viden Technologies) he built BigPicture, a client-side imaging platform for viewing massive microscope slides on low-resource devices, and continues to deliver bespoke software for microbiologists and newborn screening programs. His background spans industry and research roles at Freenome, Google, and Colorado State University, where he shipped models and pipelines for cancer and tuberculosis research and productionized lab-facing tools and APIs. Beyond software, he applies hands-on skills in carpentry and electronics to prop and set design for theater productions, bringing an engineer’s craft to creative, real-world builds. He also runs a local data recovery service and authors open-source automation to help people retrieve lost data—an unusual blend of applied ML, lab engineering, and maker pragmatism. Based in San Francisco, he prefers remote work but will dive onsite for projects that require hands-on problem solving and collaboration.
