Boris Steipe is a Professor Emeritus and interdisciplinary scientist with decades of academic leadership in biochemistry, structural biology and bioinformatics, having founded and directed the University of Toronto’s Specialist Program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from 2004–2019. Trained as an MD and habilitated in biochemistry at LMU Munich, he held research positions at the Max Planck Institute and led a group at the Genzentrum before a long tenure as a tenured associate professor in Toronto. His work bridges protein chemistry, systems biology and computational methods, and in recent years he has pushed conversations at the intersection of science, art and the humanities. Uncommonly for a life scientist, he has also engaged with philosophical and aesthetic dimensions of research and is now active in shaping academic responses to Generative AI.
