Chris Develder is an associate professor and researcher at IDLab, Ghent University – imec, blending over a decade of academic and industry experience in communication networks, optical systems, NLP and machine learning. He holds an MSc in computer science and a PhD in electrical engineering from Ghent University and has applied his expertise as a senior network engineer in industry and as a visiting researcher at UC Davis and Columbia. Chris leads two research teams focused on converting text to knowledge via information extraction and on analytics/ML for smart grids, while maintaining a research thread in optical network modeling and optimization for cloud/grid infrastructures. He has a strong track record in European and national research projects and regularly reviews for top IEEE/OSA and ACM venues, reflecting deep engagement with both theoretical and applied communities. Notably, his career bridges hands-on optical network design and modern ML-driven information extraction, enabling interdisciplinary approaches to networked data and smart energy systems.
