Chris Swain is a medicinal chemistry and drug discovery leader with over three decades of experience transitioning from a senior director role at Merck to founding Cambridge MedChem Consulting in 2006. He combines hands-on expertise in high-throughput screening analysis, hit-to-lead programmes, lead optimisation and computational chemistry (virtual screening, QSAR) with independent licensing oversight for academia and industry collaborations. At Merck he led the NK1 antagonist programme that produced multiple preclinical candidates and contributed to a marketed drug (Emend), and he has since supported Wellcome-funded projects and sits on advisory boards including Parkinson's UK DDAP and Sitryx. He’s active in the scientific community—chairing RSC committees, organising major meetings and delivering training courses—while also building practical informatics tools earlier in his career (web-based project portals and HTS analysis software). Known for bridging chemistry, computation and project leadership, he brings rare experience in both initiating fruitful discovery programmes and implementing the informatics infrastructure that accelerates them. Based in Greater Cambridge, he continues to advise pharma and academic groups on lead finding strategy and optimisation.
