Chunyu Zhao is a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in the San Francisco Bay Area with over a decade of experience in microbiome research and precision bioinformatics. She has led development of widely used pipelines including MIDAS2, co-developed Sunbeam, and created Nanoflow for nanopore whole-genome sequencing, blending production-grade software engineering with domain research. At Chan Zuckerberg Biohub she advances MWAS and other microbiome analyses in Katie Pollard’s lab, translating complex datasets into reproducible, scalable workflows. Trained as an engineer with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, she combines systems thinking from electrical engineering with hands-on sequencing analytics. Outside the lab she’s applied her coaching energy as a former BODYCOMBAT instructor, an unexpected thread that reflects her drive to motivate teams and persist through challenging problems.
