Top SchoolDarol Anger is a versatile, genre-defying fiddler, composer, producer and educator with decades of experience shaping contemporary string music through ensembles like the Turtle Island String Quartet, David Grisman Quintet, and his Republic of Strings. As a long-time educator—Associate Professor at Berklee and current Professor of Fiddle at ArtistWorks—he blends rigorous improvisation pedagogy with innovative online teaching methods. A prolific recording artist and producer since the 1970s, his work spans concert halls, film soundtracks, and even the theme of NPR’s Car Talk and the SimCity games, demonstrating an unusual crossover into popular media. He has collaborated with jazz, classical, and roots luminaries from Béla Fleck to Stéphane Grappelli, bringing technical depth and adventurous arranging to each project. A MacDowell and UCross fellow with numerous residencies and grants, Anger pairs institutional recognition with a DIY creative spirit—running his Fiddlistics publishing and production umbrella. Based in California, he remains an active performer, mentor and connector who continually expands what the modern string ensemble can be.
