David Fanning is a veteran technical writer, trainer, and science programmer with over a decade of professional experience combining storytelling and hands-on engineering. He built the widely respected "IDL Coyote" brand, authored three IDL books and 500+ technical articles that made complex scientific programming approachable and often entertaining. David has delivered training and consulting for institutions like the U.S. Air Force, Max-Planck, CSIRO, and Sandia, and has a track record of turning one-off contacts into long-term customers and revenue growth. Beyond code and documentation, he is an accomplished longform journalist, photographer, and outdoor speaker whose book Voices of The Colorado Trail grew from three years of interviews and travel. He blends consultative support with deep debugging skill and a knack for reframing technical problems into practical solutions. Based in Fort Collins, he pairs formal science training (B.S. in Physics, Ph.D. work in Biochemistry) with modern front-end skills and a lifelong passion for wilderness stewardship.

The Coyote Library evolved from work David Fanning was doing teaching IDL courses and answering IDL questions on the IDL newsgroup. It is meant to be a well-documented library that demonstrates how to write solid (dare we say eloquent) IDL programs that are easy to maintain and extend. You can learn more about these programs and about IDL programming in general at David's web page, Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming.
