Douglas Caldwell is a research astrophysicist and instrumentation specialist with over two decades of experience bridging optical/infrared hardware and data-analysis software for space missions. As a Principal Investigator at the SETI Institute and former Kepler Instrument Scientist, he led CCD photometer characterization, calibration-model development, and anomaly resolution for flagship exoplanet surveys. He currently supports the TESS pipeline, applying hands-on instrument testing experience to operational data processing and mission risk assessment. Douglas has led field deployments—including a National Science Foundation–funded South Pole transiting-exoplanet search—and combines telescope design, firmware/ software prototyping, and team leadership. Trained with a PhD in Physics from Rensselaer, he pairs deep experimental rigor with practical mission-focused problem solving. Colleagues rely on him for translating subtle instrument behavior into robust calibration and pipeline solutions that preserve scientific return.
