Summary
Elmer Fernández is a translational data science leader with over a decade of experience applying statistical learning and signal processing to genomics, proteomics and cardiovascular research across Argentina. As head of the BioDataMining BIA node and leader of the Translational Data Science & AI Lab at Fundación para el Progreso de la Medicina, he designs end-to-end pipelines for transcriptomics, proteomics and variant analysis and leads multi-source data integration for cancer genomics and precision medicine. He is the principal biostatistician and bioinformatician for a US NCI-funded molecular profiling study of breast cancer in Latin American women, and his group develops variant and exome analysis workflows used nationally. Beyond bioinformatics, he has led FDA-approved medical device signal processing (GALIX holter) development and guided the creation of Argentina’s first stent, reflecting a rare blend of computational, engineering and translational impact. Trained with a PhD in Advanced Computing and Applied AI, he specializes in GLMMs, SVMs and neural methods for big biomedical data while extending techniques to non-biomedical problems.
