Feng Yan is a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston who leads the Intelligent Data and Systems Lab, marrying AI research with high-performance systems engineering. Over a decade of experience spans large language models, large-scale distributed deep learning, federated learning, AutoML, serverless computing and AI infrastructure, with close collaborations with Microsoft, Google, Meta, IBM and other industry labs. He has secured over $4M in external funding (including $2.6M as PI/Site-PI), published at top venues in both ML and systems, and advised students now placed in leading research labs and national labs. His work uniquely bridges practical performance engineering (scalability tools and schedulers developed at Microsoft and HP Labs) with domain-driven AI applications in health, physics and materials science. Recipient of an NSF CAREER and multiple best paper awards, he also serves the community as ACM SIGMETRICS Social Media Chair, signaling a blend of research impact and public-facing engagement.
