Fernando Brito E Abreu is an associate professor and researcher in software engineering at ISCTE-IUL, holding a PhD from Instituto Superior Técnico and leading the MSc program in Computer Science and Management. With over three decades of academic and research experience, he pioneered Empirical Software Engineering in Portugal by founding the QUASAR group and has supervised around 30 theses including seven PhDs. He has published roughly 200 scientific works, is cited ~2,800 times (h-index 23), and has held visiting and teaching roles across several Portuguese institutions and the École des Mines de Nantes. Beyond academia he has experience in industry leadership (former CIO and software head) and long-standing service as Portugal’s delegate to IFIP TC2, bridging theory and practice in software development. A less obvious strength is his maritime telecommunications background, reflecting an early technical breadth that complements his later software-systems focus.
