Top SchoolFernando Paolo is a Senior Machine Learning Engineer with 15 years of experience applying ML and high-performance computing to remote sensing and Earth science problems. Based in Pasadena, he builds scalable algorithms and cloud-native workflows to analyze petabytes of satellite SAR and altimetry data, driving projects like next-generation global vessel detection and continent-scale ice-shelf change records. His background spans research roles at JPL and Scripps and a PhD in Geophysics from UC San Diego, combining rigorous scientific inquiry with production-grade software engineering. He excels at fusing multi-sensor satellite observations with deep learning to reveal subtle climate and human impacts—work that has led to novel large-scale data products and peer-reviewed discoveries. Notably, he has implemented terabyte-to-petabyte parallel processing pipelines on supercomputers and cloud infrastructure, turning complex geophysical questions into operational ML systems.
