Frédéric Piel is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Imperial College London with over 15 years of experience applying geostatistics and spatial models to public health questions. Trained in geographical sciences (1st class Hons) and with a PhD in spatial ecology, he led global mapping initiatives on inherited haemoglobin disorders at the Malaria Atlas Project and remains an expert contributor to the Global Burden of Disease study. His research blends rigorous quantitative methods with large-scale environment–health and chronic disease surveillance projects at the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit, including leadership of the Lancet Haematology Commission on Sickle Cell Disease. As Director of Training for multiple MRC/NIHR programmes he combines active teaching and programme coordination with high-impact policy-facing research. He is notable for translating detailed spatial evidence into actionable public health recommendations, particularly for haemoglobinopathies, while increasingly integrating “big data” environmental exposure work into chronic disease epidemiology.
