Gareth Hughes is a hands-on Chief Architect with three decades of Java-centric software architecture experience, currently owning scale, performance, reliability and security for CloudPay’s global platforms. He scaled from hands-on developer to CTO during a period when CloudPay grew from 160 to 1,300 employees, then returned to focus on large-scale modernisation and non-functional excellence. Gareth led major migrations (SVN→Bitbucket, custom DAL→Spring DAO/Transactions), built the company’s REST API, introduced Dell Boomi and Sisense integrations, and drove an Agile transformation to improve delivery at scale. He combines deep academic roots (PhD from the University of Southampton) with practical system-level work—from payroll core refactors to platform governance and compliance (ISO27001/SOC1/GDPR). Known internally as the “Product Owner for Scale,” he routinely takes on the hardest refactoring and integration problems others avoid, ensuring legacy systems remain current and ready for growth.
