Gary Steele is an Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Professor of quantum nanoscience at TU Delft with a decade of leading a full-stack experimental group that builds, fabricates, and measures superconducting circuit–mechanical systems to probe quantum states of motion. Trained in condensed matter physics (PhD MIT) and seasoned with creative nanotube nanofabrication during his postdoc, he now focuses on coupling microwave cavities, SQUIDs and transmon qubits to on-chip mechanical resonators using cQED techniques. His lab’s hands-on ethos trains students end-to-end—from design and cleanroom fabrication to low-temperature measurement and theoretical modeling—fostering intuitive understanding of complex quantum problems. Based in The Hague, he pursues the long-term, high-risk goal of exploring intersections between quantum mechanics and gravity through engineered nanomechanical platforms.
