Gordon Rates is a CEO and founder with over a decade of software development and data science experience across large organisations (Statoil/Equinor, Alliance Boots, Mercer) and multiple London startups. He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Science from the University of Manchester and completed a conversion to data science in 2015, combining solid academic foundations with practical ML and visualization skills. In 2016 he founded Node on the Edge Ltd and spun out AirNode Ltd in 2017 to apply data science to air quality, winning early support and clients including the Scottish Environment Protection Agency via the CivTech programme. His work focuses on advanced data visualization, machine learning for environmental datasets, and production-ready dashboards that translate complex measurements into actionable insights. Less obvious is his dual focus on societal impact and product control: he intentionally built startups to steer his career toward projects that deliver measurable public-health and policy value. Based in London, he continues to evolve AirNode technology through collaborations with European and UK government agencies while exploring automated sports video annotation at Node on the Edge.
