Summary
James Carroll is a cultural historian, educator, and musician with nearly a decade of formal experience teaching history and humanities across K-12, higher education, and adult education settings. He combines deep expertise in contemporary music history and Africana studies with hands-on instructional design, building online humanities curricula and CMS-based learning environments since the early days of Blackboard. A former Academic Director for study abroad programs in Africa, he brings global program leadership experience and a strong grounding in international education practice. Trained as a jazz composer (Berklee; M.M. UMass Amherst) and an active guitarist/composer across jazz, Afrobeat, and electronic styles, he intentionally integrates musical practice into course design and public-facing projects. James is practical about pedagogy—advising students, designing multimedia lessons, and standing in for classroom instructors—while also pursuing a renewed focus on composing and performing. Based in Hyannis, MA, he offers instructional design consulting that leverages Digital Humanities methods to make humanities teaching more interactive and web-native.
