James Grady is a principal designer and educator with over two decades of interdisciplinary experience, currently leading Design Axl and serving as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Boston University. He blends immersive design, performance, and computation in both his creative practice and research, exemplified by his "Random Actor" project that links human performance to computational design tools. At BU he directs cross-college collaborations and co-teaches Spark! Product Innovation, bringing industry-grade design methods into the classroom. Previously he led design projects for major clients at Fathom and kor group and taught information design at MIT, demonstrating a rare mix of high-profile client work and academic rigor. His MFA from RISD and early background in digital media inform a practice that values prototyping, play, and empirically driven experimentation. Colleagues note his ability to turn speculative ideas into actionable curricula and client deliverables, making universities a laboratory for professional practice.
