James Reimer is an Associate Professor and marine biologist based at the University of the Ryukyus whose research for nearly two decades has focused on the biodiversity of understudied benthic cnidarians and their symbionts across shallow coral reefs to the deep sea. He combines field-based taxonomy and ecology with studies of human impacts on coastal ecosystems, bringing both classical systematics and conservation perspectives to "minor taxa." Awarded the Okinawa Research Prize in 2015, he is recognized for research that advances understanding and stewardship of the Ryukyu marine environment. Trained with a PhD in Marine Biology from Kagoshima University and a BSc in Ecology from UBC, he is fluent in Japanese scientific contexts and has longstanding ties to regional research institutions including JAMSTEC. An often-overlooked aspect of his work is its emphasis on cryptic diversity and symbiont relationships, which reshapes how we assess reef health and biodiversity baselines.
