Jan Ilavsky is an instrumental scientist and materials characterization expert who has run the Advanced Photon Source’s unique ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) instrument since 1999. He develops and maintains widely used open-source tools for scattering data—most notably the Irena analysis package and the Nika area-detector reduction package—and has authored several smaller software utilities that support beamline science. With a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and over 150 publications, his work bridges experimental technique, data processing, and practical application of X-ray and neutron scattering. Based in Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL, he combines deep instrument stewardship with hands-on software development, a blend that has helped make APS’s USAXS capabilities globally distinctive.
