Jan Pearce is a Professor of Computer and Information Science at Berea College who founded the college’s CIS major and served as inaugural chair of both the department and the Resources, Technology & Commerce division. A 2022 Fulbright Scholar and Tweag Fellow, she blends curricular innovation, open-source advocacy, and evidence-driven assessment to scale programs and mentor faculty—growing the major five-fold and hiring dozens of faculty. Her work spans course and program design, interdisciplinary course development, data-driven divisional restructuring using novel clustering techniques, and college-wide mentoring initiatives. Known for introducing students to collaborative computing practices, she researches active-learning pedagogies like POGIL to boost teamwork, self-efficacy, and durable learning, including international work in Ghana.
