Jason Chaw is a research-driven software engineer with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UT Austin and over a decade of experience applying knowledge representation, NLP, and machine learning to real-world question-answering and search problems. He built ASKME during his dissertation to help users query unfamiliar knowledge bases and later helped enrich KBs by designing learning-by-reading systems that extract conceptual models from text. At IBM Research he extended Watson’s DeepQA capabilities—contributing to question analysis, knowledge extraction, and common-sense resources—and today drives relevance and ranking work on Microsoft Bing, where his systems leverage online metrics and ML to improve customer experience and business outcomes. Combining academic rigor with product-facing impact, he has a track record of turning prototypes into transformative components that scale in production search and QA systems.
