Top SchoolJeff Smith is a communications director and career journalist with more than two decades of editorial leadership and 16 years of professional experience shaping stories about the environment and the outdoors. He led Traverse Magazine as editor and VP of editorial for 20 years, guiding award-winning narrative work and production across print and digital while building tools to manage assignments, photography and budgets. Now he directs communications for a regional environmental nonprofit, overseeing content strategy, media relations, newsletters and a 20-person staff to advance sustainable food, clean energy, and smart-growth initiatives. His background includes investigative policy research on hazardous and radioactive waste, a rare blend of deep technical reporting and place-based storytelling, and he has also turned longform reporting into a trade book. Active in local civic life as a zoning board chair and former school board president, he pairs newsroom rigor with hands-on community leadership in northern Michigan.
