Top SchoolJess Unrein is a Staff Software Engineer in Chicago with 12 years of experience building data-driven, production-grade systems across insurance, analytics, and high-growth startups. They’ve led teams to design scalable APIs and data pipelines—running telematics at enterprise scale and onboarding over a billion images for property data—while also shipping microservices, RBAC/OAuth2 security, and CI/CD in regulated environments. Known for mentoring and improving onboarding and documentation, Jess pairs people-first leadership with hands-on engineering, often acting as tech lead and interim scrum master to staff up teams. Their background in nonprofits and a BA in Political Science gives them a unique lens for building tools that connect people and communities, not just systems. A Dev Bootcamp grad fluent in Python, Flask, Java, and cloud tooling, they excel at turning messy monoliths into maintainable microservices and production workflows. Beyond code, Jess focuses on process, cross-team coordination, and practical product outcomes that drive measurable business impact.
