Joao Carreira is a veteran technology entrepreneur and CEO who co-founded and helped scale Critical Software from a bootstrapped startup in 1998 into a global leader in digital and safety-critical engineering. With a PhD in Computer Science and an MBA-focused stint at UT Austin, he blends deep technical expertise in distributed, fault-tolerant systems with strategic leadership across a diverse group of companies, joint ventures and a corporate venture fund. He has steered roles from CEO and chairman to board and advisory positions at ventures spanning automotive, manufacturing, education and health, including a long-standing board role in the BMW–CRITICAL joint venture Critical TechWorks. A certified B-Corp steward, Joao is committed to using business as a force for good while mentoring founders and investing in impact-driven startups. Outside the boardroom he’s a hands-on technologist—“software/firmware and microcontrollers addicted”—who also pursues organic olive oil and wine production in Portugal, reflecting a blend of engineering rigor and life-long curiosity.
