João Lopes is a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology with a decade of hands-on experience in welding and advanced materials research. His doctoral work centers on fusion-based welding of high-entropy and shape memory alloys, combining experimental platform development—he built a prototype welding rig—with data-driven analysis using Python to process synchrotron X-ray diffraction datasets. He complements experiments with CalPhaD thermodynamic simulations to deeply probe similar and dissimilar joint behavior, and now expands that expertise as a visiting scholar at the Center for Advanced Materials Joining (CAMJ), University of Waterloo. João is focused on the intersection of welding and additive manufacturing, values collaborative problem-solving, and is approaching the transition from academia to industry-ready roles. An enduring learner, he brings both practical prototyping skills and computational analysis to materials joining challenges.
