Summary
João Quintas is a robotics and automation researcher with a PhD from the University of Coimbra and over a decade coordinating RTD activities at Instituto Pedro Nunes, where he leads projects in Active and Assisted Living and intelligent environments. He combines hands-on technical management of European and national research programmes (FP7, H2020, AAL, P2020) with academic roles as invited assistant professor and research associate at ISR-UC. His research blends artificial social companions, context-aware human–machine interaction and human behaviour analysis—fields explored in a PhD thesis on context-based interaction frameworks and in more than 30 published works and book chapters. João is also engaged in standards work, contributing to the IEEE AuR Ontology (1872.2) and ethics-related standards (IEEE 7000), which underlines his interest in trustworthy autonomous systems. Known for bridging applied research and project delivery, he brings uncommon expertise in turning multidisciplinary academic knowledge into deployable AAL solutions.
