Joaquin Matres is a chip design leader and entrepreneur with over a decade of experience building silicon photonics and integrated optics across Intel, HP Labs, PsiQuantum and Google X. As Co-Founder and CTO of GDSFactory, he turned an open-source Python-first chip design toolkit into a widely adopted platform (4M+ downloads, 105+ contributors) and commercialized enterprise-grade GDSFactory+ PDK and verification services. He has led teams from single engineers to 100+, shipped dozens of photonic ICs, and helped scale design-for-foundry workflows for photonics, quantum and MEMS. Known for marrying rigorous research (PhD in Silicon Photonics) with pragmatic software engineering, he also helped seed Google’s open silicon ecosystem efforts inspired by TensorFlow’s impact. Based in Mountain View, he combines hands-on layout, automation and tool-building with community-driven open-source stewardship.
