Joe Parker is a multidisciplinary research scientist and bioinformatics engineer with 11 years of experience applying genomics, automation and data engineering to real-world bioscience problems. Currently a Senior Research Fellow at the National Biofilms Innovation Centre, he designs and runs molecular and in silico experiments, builds industry–academia partnerships, and advises on innovation and data strategy. He led rapid scale-up of a COVID-19 testing megalab—architecting automated lab and digital workflows that grew throughput from hundreds to tens of thousands of tests per day. His technical repertoire spans phylogenomics, pipeline and middleware development (Java, Python, R, Flask, React, RDBMS, Unix), IoT and lab automation architecture, and precision bioscience data platforms. An erstwhile field genomicist (first in-field eukaryote genome sequencing) and invited speaker with multiple awards, he pairs rigorous computational method development with hands-on lab systems thinking. Outside the lab he’s an experienced educator, published writer and touring musician—evidence of a creative communicator who thrives at the intersection of science, engineering and public engagement.
