Top SchoolJoel Pickin is a self-taught Head of Engineering with 8+ years of hands-on experience shipping full-stack web and mobile products across finance, construction, and gambling. He progressed from solo developer to technical lead and now runs engineering at ION, pairing C# .NET backends with Next.js frontends to deliver pragmatic, production-ready systems. Joel champions a builder mentality — he writes about product development (thisisbuiltwith.ai) and grows learning communities (The Self-Taught Tech Network), demonstrating a focus on developer enablement beyond code. Known for rapid iteration and practical solutions, he combines leadership, mentoring, and entrepreneurship to scale teams and products. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, he’s driven by the belief that curiosity and access beat credentials, and often turns that ethos into tangible hiring, onboarding, and community-building practices.
