John Carff is a Senior Research Associate at IHMC with over a decade of experience designing software and user interfaces for robotics and micro-aerial vehicles. He joined IHMC in 2003 and—holding a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of West Florida—played a key role as primary operator and software contributor to IHMC’s DARPA Robotics Challenge team that placed 2nd globally. His work spans 3D modeling, simulations, virtual reality, and control interfaces that bridge human operators and complex robotic systems. An avid model aircraft builder and pilot, he brings hands-on flight experience to his research on MAVs and UI design, translating practical insights into robust control software. Based in Pensacola, he blends long-term institutional knowledge with a solver’s mindset for real-world robotics problems.
