John Williams is an engineering consultant and former academic leader with over 30 years' experience in photonics, microwave photonics, and electronic engineering education. He earned a PhD from Imperial College London for work on mode-locked lasers and went on to help build Aston University's Photonics Research group, pioneering research on dark solitons and in-fibre Bragg grating devices. As Reader and later Head of Department he launched new MSc programmes, introduced distance learning and led the first Level 6 workplace-based degree apprenticeship in embedded systems. He also established microwave photonics research applied to sub-carrier multiplexed signals for femtocell networks and has authored over 130 peer-reviewed papers. From 2020 he drove digital pedagogy across the School of Engineering, setting up a video studio and scaling online assessment and staff training. Since August 2024 he consults part time via Ardenoak, combining hands-on technical expertise with curriculum and industry-focused training.
