Top SchoolJonathan Brachthäuser is a Full Professor of Software Engineering and Programming Languages at the University of Tübingen with 15 years of research and engineering experience spanning academia and industry. His work focuses on effect systems, control flow, compiler diagnostics, and type inference, with hands-on contributions to prominent open-source projects like the Scala 3 compiler and the Scala language/documentation sites. He has driven both foundational research and practical implementations—implementing recursion schemes in Matryoshka, improving Scala 3 parsing and error messages, and contributing to the Koka language compiler. Jonathan bridges rigorous formal methods with developer-facing tooling, improving usability (e.g., clearer docs and download flows) as well as core compiler behavior. His trajectory includes a PhD from Tübingen, a postdoc at EPFL, and a Microsoft research internship, reflecting a mix of deep theory and production-quality engineering. Colleagues value him for making subtle language-design improvements that yield outsized benefits in error reporting and developer experience.
