Jonathan Hogg is a multidisciplinary digital artist and technologist based in London with over 15 years’ experience blending software, electronics and live audiovisual performance. Trained in software and electronics, he transitioned to the creative industries in 2009 and now designs interactive installations, multi-sensory works and live visuals that combine embedded systems, LED lighting, 2D/3D graphics and analogue circuitry. He is a partner in the Output Arts collective and a visiting lecturer at University of the Arts London, teaching digital product design and introductory programming to design students. A practical hands-on engineer, Jonathan has contributed ESP32-specific improvements to the widely used MicroPython project, demonstrating deep embedded-systems expertise alongside his public-facing commissions at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Queen’s House projections. Occasionally working with wood, metal and paint as part of his builds, he also facilitates creative education from nursery through further education and designs bespoke digital products for clients.

Contributions summary:Jonathan primarily contributed to the ESP32-specific implementation within the MicroPython project, focusing on the RMT (Remote Control Transmission) peripheral. Their work involved fixing bugs related to looping behavior, enhancing the API to specify idle levels and carrier frequencies, and adjusting the code for newer versions of the ESP-IDF. Furthermore, they made improvements to other ESP32 hardware interfaces, including SPI and ADC, by fixing bugs and adding features, as well as the addition of a new function to control whether the pin configuration is retained in deep-sleep.
