Top SchoolJonathan Lukens is a seasoned software engineer with 13 years of experience building and scaling data-heavy systems, currently contributing to PayPal's engineering efforts. He specializes in PostgreSQL performance and large-scale database sharding, having designed zero-downtime scaling layers for ActiveRecord and maintained critical Elasticsearch and Kafka pipelines. Jonathan has toggled between hands-on engineering and management—confirming he prefers writing code—and even paused to run a small farm, reflecting a pragmatic, results-first mindset and a taste for real-world problem solving. Comfortable across Ruby, Rails, Python, and infrastructure tooling, he brings deep operational experience plus a knack for persuading vendors to fix performance issues rather than papering over them.
