Top SchoolJosé Fonte is a senior software engineering leader based in Portugal with a decade of experience scaling teams and systems across startup and enterprise environments. Currently Senior Director of Software Engineering at Cloudbeds after progressing through principal and director roles, he blends hands-on architecture and principal-level coding with a people-first leadership style that emphasizes trust and empowerment. He contributes to the developer ecosystem through open-source work, draws on formal study in machine learning from Stanford, and values continuous learning—treating every role as a university. Known for leading from behind, José pairs startup agility with enterprise rigor to deliver reliable, maintainable products while mentoring teams to remove blockers rather than create them. Outside of work he channels creativity and balance into surfing, drumming, and writing, which he credits for repeatedly collaborating on unexpectedly exhilarating projects.
