Julius Garbe
Antarctica Director at PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany
Summary
👤
SeniorJulius Garbe is an Antarctica Director and polar climate scientist who bridges cutting-edge cryosphere research with international climate policy, advising forums such as the UNFCCC and the Antarctic Treaty System. With a foundation in physics, mathematics, and Earth system sciences and over eight years of research experience, he has investigated Antarctic Ice Sheet stability, tipping points, and contributions to sea-level rise during a doctoral tenure at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Now leading ICCI’s Antarctic work while continuing research as a guest researcher at PIK, he translates complex ice-dynamics science into actionable mitigation and adaptation policy guidance. Julius is particularly focused on the governance risks posed by rapid ice loss and on ensuring scientific evidence shapes ambitious international commitments. Colleagues value his ability to synthesize technical models and uncertainty into clear negotiation inputs that influence decision-making across science and diplomacy.
