Kaan Akşit is an Associate Professor of Computational Light at UCL and founder of the Computational Light Laboratory, with 14 years of research and industry experience at the intersection of optics and computation. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering and has translated deep academic expertise into applied breakthroughs in computational displays, holography, VR/AR and autostereoscopic systems, earning multiple best-paper and Emerging Technologies awards at SIGGRAPH, IEEE VR and ISMAR. Previously he was NVIDIA’s senior research scientist in the New Experiences Group, where he helped stand up labs and recruit teams to commercialize novel near-eye and multi-view display technologies. His work blends optics, electronics and AI-driven computational methods, and spans both hands-on hardware development and software for real-world products. Less obvious: he has a track record of cross-disciplinary projects from medical-device prototyping during his PhD to visible light communication apps at Disney Research, showing an appetite for turning foundational research into diverse practical systems.
