Top SchoolKaren Tolva is a design-driven frontend engineer with 15 years of experience crafting polished web UIs and bridging the gap between visual design and engineering. Based in Mountain View, she’s been the first frontend/design hire at multiple startups, built Materialize Cloud’s UI and color systems, and consistently turns vague sketches into production-ready features. A longtime open-source contributor and maintainer of rustacean.net (creator of Ferris the Rustacean and illustrator of The Rust Programming Language cover), she blends illustration and product thinking into her work. Karen excels at advocating for users while shipping maintainable code, and she also monetizes her art through stickers and swag commissions. Outside of work she pursues e-biking, puzzle hunts, and web art projects, often sketching cute mascots that humanize complex software.
